I watch the show, “What Not to Wear.”  For those not familiar, it’s a show where family members and friends turn their loved ones in to get a makeover. Some of the transformations are amazing. With the help of friends and family, the person is secretly filmed for a two week period.  The person is then confronted with the footage of how they are dressing.  Most times they are dressed in baggy clothes, sweats or things that are not age appropriate.  When confronted about how they are dressing, there is always a deep rooted cause.  Most if not all of the responses centered on low self esteem. However, their outward response to how others viewed their dress was always a defensive one. They always pretended to not care what others saw or what they thought; when in actuality they really did care.

Of course, I started thinking about how I dress.  I think I dress pretty good now; at least my husband tells me so.  However, it was not always like that.  I carried so much within me due to my past and it certainly affected how I dressed.  I would wear clothes that were to big for me. Of course, I had my reasons, such as: not appropriate for church or work; not trying to bring attention to myself, etc, etc.  Do you want to know the real reason?  I was covering my secrets of shame, guilt, hurts, failures and even success. Yes, I said success.  We dress for the occasion. Yours might be shame and for someone else it may be success.  While you might not wear baggy clothes, you cover of your secrets with wearing expensive clothes. You don’t want anyone to know what is going inside your world, so you cover of your secrets by hiding behind your expensive clothes and your successful career. We hide behind what makes us feel comfortable.

It’s time for a makeover.  While we all cannot get on the show “What Not to Wear”; we can have our own private show.  Of course, I was thinking of ways, I could get on.  You know they give a $5,000 card and turn you loose in New York City.  I don’t wear the clothes of my past anymore, however I was scheming ya’ll.  Who would not want a shopping spree? (lol!!!)  Anyhow, it is time to change how you dress. It is time to discover the root cause of why you dress the way you do.  It’s time to understand “what not to wear” and become authentic in what you are wearing.

Anybody ready to join me on a shopping spree? (lol!!!) I’m just sayin’

Love you to life!

Sandra

It is amazing how we don't realize that how we feel is seen in how we dress sometimes.  Thank you Lakeisha for your comment.  I think we all go on a shopping spree :o)

Great Post! I agree also what you wear says alot about a person and how the perceive themselves. I try at all time to dress for success, I never know when I might meet my next business partner, client or customer.

PS. I would love to join you in a shopping spree!!
